FIRE CLOSES DUBAI HOTEL

The five-star, 63-storey Address Downtown Dubai hotel is currently closed after a major fire broke out there in the closing hours of 2015.

The blaze, thought to have been started by a stray firework, took hold on the 20th floor around 9.00pm on December 31st 2015. All guests were evacuated. There were no reported fatalities, 14 people suffered minor injuries, one suffered moderate injuries and one suffered a heart attack during the evacuation.

The fire was mostly confined to the outside of the building, where high levels of cladding material had been fixed, for insulation. It is thought that this was the reason the fire alarm didn’t sound, nor the sprinkler system operate.

The hotel has 196 guest rooms and 626 serviced apartments. In February last year in Dubai a huge fire gutted one of the tallest buildings in the Emirates, and in November three residential blocks in Central Dubai were engulfed in a massive blaze, according to reports in the Times of India.
