Those expecting a two or three-star hotel room at the new Southend on Sea Wetherspoon Hotel at the massive Last Post pub in Weston Road there could be pleasantly disappointed, judging by the quality four-star room we were given to review during a recent stay.
Admittedly one of the largest rooms of the 14 available, as well as a very large and comfortable double bed with very good reading lighting this had a full-sized bath with a shower over, big fluffy bath towels, tea and coffee facilities with good biscuits, a big-screen TV and a sofa bed for extra guests. The hotel, located in the town centre next to Central station, was completed last year and prices for all the rooms, on an accommodation only basis, start at £39 for a Sunday, £69 for Monday to Thursday, £79 for Friday and £99 for Saturday – book early for the best. Breakfast, for £4 – £6 can be taken in the bar, which has nearly 300 covers and 60 more out in the beer garden, from 7.00-12.00
Those going to Southend Airport for a flight can walk to Victoria station in 10 minutes and take a five minute train journey for £2.50. The hourly X30 bus from the bus station takes 15 mins and costs £3.50, and there are taxis that could be the best option for two or more travelling together.
Wetherspoons are expanding their hotel portfolio and currently have 31 in England, with eight of them new and three more on the way, seven in Scotland and four in Wales.
